Zhongshan, China

Introduction of Zhongshan

Zhongshan is situated in the Pearl River Delta Region of Guangdong Province, on the west bank of the estuary of the Pearl River. It is geographically connected with Guangzhou(capital of Guangdong Province) on the north and in vicinity to Hong Kong and Macao. The total mileage of the city reaches 1,665.8 km. There are three foreign trade ports within the city and five airports around. Railway transportation to other parts of the country is also convenient with the railways starting in the nearby Guangzhou. Zhongshan covers an area of 1,800 sq km and has a permanent population of some 1.4 million. The city is located in a subtropical humid zone with an annual average temperature around 23.0°C.

Zhongshan has nurtured numerous prominent historical figures throughout its history. On November 12, 1866, Dr. Sun Yat-sen (also Sun Zhongshan,) the great forerunner of China's democratic revolution, was born at Cuiheng village of Zhongshan. In memory of him, the county of Xiangshan, which was set up in 1152, was renamed after Dr. Sun as Zhongshan in 1925. Now, Zhongshan is China's only city that is named after a great historical figure. The Zhongshan Municipal Government is now working hard to serve the people and be responsible for the people. We give top priority to the task of ensuring people's health and safety. We implement all kinds of policies in line with the laws and regulations, and help many government departments carry out their functions. If you have any advice or suggestions, please feel free to contact us. The people of Zhongshan are diligent, intelligent, friendly and passionate. We welcome your visits and investments here.

Lingnan Waterside Village

Minzhong Town, dubbed as Lingnan Waterside Village, is the best maintained natural and humanistic ecologic scenic spot full of charms of a watery town. The beautiful environment and well-preserved traditions offer Minzhong the idyllic scenery. From 2007, Zhongshan began to hold Tourism and Culture Festival of Lingnan Waterside Village, including photo exhibition themed on harmonious village, high-quality agricultural products fair, local cuisine street, watery sport meeting and folk art show of waterside village. The watery sport meeting is especially worth mentioning; various matches including tug of war on the water, eel-catching contest, duck-catching contest and wife-carrying contest often draw crowds of people.

Annual Charity Parade

The parade co-organized by Municipal Culture Bureau and Municipal Administration Bureau to raise money for the elderly person in need on the 7th Day of the 1st Month of Chinese Lunar New Year in 1988 embarked on the long history of charity parade in Zhongshan. Every year from the Spring Festival to the Chinese Lantern Festival, people from all walks of life in Zhongshan will advocate Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s fraternity spirit, raise money for humanitarian aids and promote the social welfare undertakings. The theme of the parade varies each year, including offering assistances for the wounded and the dying, helping and supporting the poor, providing a better life for senior citizens and the disability. On that day, more than 10,000 persons gather together, and then they parade along a certain route and give cultural and artistic performances with local features along the road. It has also further promoted the cultural connotation through cultural ideology and provided a better opportunity for the development of local folk art.

The Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen

No trip to Zhongshan is complete without a visit here. Situated in Cuiheng Village, Nanlang Town, the 140-thousand-square-meter museum is a national protection unit of cultural relics, consisting of Exhibition of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Exhibition of Cuiheng Folk Houses, Exhibition of Cuiheng Farming and Exhibition of Yangyin, famous leader of the Chinese workers' movement and democratic revolutionary Lu Haodong. Themed on Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the social environment where he was born and raised, the museum provides some truly fascinating insights into the history and folk customs at that time.

Exhibition of Dr. Sun Yat-sen includes the Former Residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. The Former Residence was built under the guidance of Dr. Sun Yat-sen himself with the money from his eldest brother, Sun Mei. The building is a combination of Guangdong-style brick-and-tile house and western folk house.

Exhibition of Cuiheng Folk Houses shows the various folk customs in Cuiheng Village and the Pearl River Delta region, and provides a three-dimensional reappearance of the life of different social standings at that time in Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s birthplace.

Guzhen Lighting

Guzhen Town is situated at the northwest periphery of Zhongshan and the junction of Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Foshan City, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macau, with a total area of 47.8 square kilometers. Lighting industry is the leading and pillar industry of the town. Since 1982, Guzhen Town has become the largest production base and wholesale market of lighting fittings in China and one of the top specialized markets of lighting fittings worldwide. After more than ten years’ guidance and support, a ten-kilometer lighting street has been formed with over 1,000 lighting enterprises. In 2002, the town was awarded China’s Lighting Capital by China National Light Industry Council and China Association of Lighting Industry, forming the industrial cluster of characteristic economy and core competitiveness. There are now more than 5,000 registered enterprises engaging in lighting fitting production, employing 60,000 people. Guzhen’s lighting fittings products controlled 60% of the national market while these products are not only sold in domestic market, but also popular in the market of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, U.S. and Europe. In 1999, the first China (Guzhen) International Lighting Fair was held in Guzhen, ushering a phase of favorable exhibition economy for Zhongshan. The fair has been held successfully for 6 times and achieved great economic and social benefits. It will continue to hold the fair in Oct. every year to build up the famous exhibition brand home and abroad.

Xingzhong Avenue

A forerunner on the industrialization bandwagon, Zhongshan has been undergoing rapid development. A stroll along Xingzhong Avenue offers a glimpse, maybe merely the icing on the cake, of the marvelous achievements made in Zhangshan since the implementation of reform and opening policy.

Ranked as one of the top 10 attractions of Zhongshan, Xingzhong Avenue is now a new landmark. Walking down Xingzhong Avenue, you may easily find that why this city can receive so many titles such as "National Garden City", National Model City in Environmental Protection", "China's Excellent Tourism City", and "Habitat Scroll of Honor".

Xingzhong Avenue is one of the main traffic arteries in Zhongshan, embodying the ideals of the city planners: not only being prosperous (not to mention modern and clean) but also environment-friendly. The avenue, together with many other quality roads and avenues, weaves an efficient transportation network in Zhongshan, which contributes greatly to this charming city. Each of the buildings along both sides has its own personality, its own majesty. Since its construction, the avenue has quickly grown into the political, cultural, publicity, scientific and sports center of the city.

Xingzhong Avenue runs 3.5 kilometers long and 50 meters wide, with an 11-meter-wide central green belt. The straight, wide avenue connects the majestic building of Zhongshan NPC and CPPCC in the north to the renowned Yat-sen Memorial Park and Bo’ai Hospital in the south. The gorgeous twice-human-sized statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen in the Memorial Park is reason enough for visiting the avenue, not to mention the memorial-arch-like building of NPC. The statue and the building is in perfect symmetry, representing respectively the south and north end of the avenue as well as the great journey that Dr. Sun Yat-sen has striven all his life to realize the revolutionary ideas and the blue print of revitalizing China.

The avenue, also named as "a green corridor of jade", features its greenery. However, the most visually striking is the royal palms, grown in the central green belt in a double row. The feather-like long leaves dance to the rhythm of the wind, looking like waving hello to the visitors. The palms grow with a clean, columnar truck, which takes on a dull gray appearance and gives a sober touch to the avenue, while the exquisite potter flowers hung between the palms making it colorful and lively. To add to the splendor, the central green belt is dotted with seasonable flowers of various varieties, including rose, marigold, geranium, canna and so on, displaying alternately their beauty on a carpet of grass. Along both sides of the avenue, evergreen mango trees are planted to provide with pedestrians a necessary respite from the ruthless southern sunshine. After work, Zhongshan’s hard-working inhabitants find comfort on the wooden benches under the mango trees, their eyes fixated on the massive lawn in front of the Municipality Building, or on the people dancing or exercising in the Xingzhong Square, or on the splendid statues outside the Xingzhong Stadium. The people of Zhongshan walk along the avenue with a relaxed pace, reminding visitors that life should be a stroll, not a frantic race.

When we take a look at the buildings along both sides, we will find the Zhongshan Library, the Children Palace both of which are inscribed by former Chinese President Yang Shangkun, the spectacular stadium where concerts of celebrities, or recreational activities are often held, the hexagonal building of Zhongshan TV Station, the modern building of Zhongshan Broadcasting Station and the brand-new Museum of Science. These buildings, in harmony with the lawn in front of the Municipality Building and the heavily flowered and shady Xingzhong Square, add a unique feel to the beautiful scenery of Xingzhou Avenure.

This green corridor, a favorite site among both locals and visitors, deserves to be on any traveler's list of greatest hits in Zhongshan.

Fufeng Pagoda

Fufeng mountain, also named Yandun mountain, lies in the center of the city and Fufeng Pagoda is perched on the top of the mountain. The pagoda is a seven-storey, octagonal brick tower. Visible from all over the city, the pagoda is another landmark of Zhongshan.

The pagoda was first built in 1608 with a height of 24.5 meters. It is one of the oldest and most famous ancient towers in Zhongshan, weathering wars and revolutions.

The original tower was covered by bricks on the surface and hollow inside. In 1983, the local authorities reconstructed the tower and decorated it with lighting. The rebuilt tower remains to be seven-storey, but the top three stories are filled with earth while the rest of the four stories are hollow with stone steps leading to the corridor of each stories. The climb up the claustrophobia-inducing staircase has its rewards: the city and the surrounding area are beautifully unfolded; the view is especially spectacular at sunset or at night when the city lights twinkle beneath you.. Now the lower three stories are open to tourists.

Wuguishan Mountain

If God lived in Zhongshan, then Wuguishan Mountain, with its breathtaking natural grandeur, would be the Garden of Eden. As the only nature reserve in Zhongshan, Wuguishan Mountain offers lush scenery, wonderful hiking trails, and more than its fair share of enthusiastic yellow and red-hatted tour groups.

Zhongshan was once named as Xiangshan, derived from the Wuguishan Mountain within its area. The word Xiangshan literally means "a fragrant county", supposedly because the Wuguishan Mountain is covered with laurel trees and diversified flowers, smelling good all year long. From the history of the name, it is not hard to find the significance of Wuguishan Mountain to the city.

The terrain of Zhongshan consists of plains, high in the center and flat around. The plain area slopes down from northwest to southeast, while Wuguishan Mountain, with an elevation of 531 meters (about 1, 742 feet), towers in the mid-south of the city, and accordingly is considered as "the roof of Zhongshan". Lying at the mouth of the Pearl River, the Mountain covers 7 towns and 9 mountains, including Nantaishan Mountain, the original site of one of the top 8 sights in ancient Zhongshan. It is traditionally believed that Wuguishan Mountain, teeming with cragged rocks, rare wild animals, and splendid waterfalls, are fully comparable to the beauty of other internationally famed Lingnan scenic spots such as Xiqiaoshan Mountain and Luofushan Mountain.

Wuguishan Mountain is named after the vast and vibrant laurel trees, however, less famous, but equally impressive are the various flowers and plants typical of the mountain, such as bellflower, rhododendron, orchid, and sandal wood. In the annual flower fair during the Spring Festival, the bellflower from Wuguishan Mountain is sure to attract a great deal of people.

Spring and Autumn, with their glorious colors, are the most popular times for visiting the mountain, but summertime with its shady greens will still please the eyes. Undoubtedly, the most visually striking scene in the summertime of Wuguishan Mountain is the forest of pine, eucalyptus, fir and acacia, which contributes greatly to the preservation of water source. As a result, the bottled water originating from Wuguishan Mountain is popular and wins itself a fame of "water of longevity".

In history, Wuguishan Mountain was once an important base of operations during the anti-Japanese guerilla war, so there are a lot of legends about it. This extra flavor of some half-century legends definitely adds to the splendor of the mountain.

The Memorial Hall of Dr. Sun Yat-sen

Zhongshan is unique for its strong connection to the early 20th century reformist Sun Yat-sen, so it is no wonder that most of the sights in the city involve with the venerable leader and, because of the very same reason, the Memorial Hall of Dr. Sun Yat-sen is a must-see sight of Zhongshan.

To the east of Sunwen Road, the Memorial Hall of Sun Yat-sen pays homage to this city's most famous Sun. The memorial hall was built with the generous donation of 10 million HKD by a Zhongshan-origin Hongkongnese, Mr. Guo Desheng; the construction began on February 1, 1982 and was completed in April, 1983. On November 12, it was officially open to tourists.

The memorial hall, together with the lawn in the front, covers over 30, 000 square meters. The hall is a grand and solemn building cluster with an area of 8,400 square meters and a height of 35 meters, featuring the exhibition of the revolutionary experience of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the history of Zhongshan.

The memorial hall was inscribed by former vice-chairman of the National People's Congress Mr. Liao Chengzhi. The hall is composed of three buildings which are unique in perfectly applying Zhongshan (the Mandarin pronunciation of Yat-sen) to its design. A bird’s-eye view enables visitors to find the building cluster arranged in the form of 中 (the character of Zhong), but looking from the front, visitors will find the buildings in the form of 山 (the character of Shan).

The front building is a three-storey structure. On its first floor, a grand white marble bust of Dr. Sun Yat-sen stands in the middle of the hall and the exhibits featuring renowned, creative, advanced and special are displayed in the side halls. Old photographs, revolutionary scripts, and documentary films fill the second floor dedicated to Dr. Sun's revolutionary activities. The third floor consists of three pavilion tops, one big octagonal one in the middle, and two square ones on both sides. Such a designs makes the building, looked from the front, resemble the Chinese character 山 (Shan in Chinese). The big pavilion top in the middle is a VIP room and the symmetrical pavilion tops on both sides are lounges for VIPs.

The building in the middle is a modern air-conditioned theatre which can accommodate up to 1,477 people and is equipped with hi-tech, theatrical staging and audio visual equipment, so a number of local and international dance and music performances are often held here.

The building in the back has 6 showrooms, displaying the historical relics of Zhongshan, the revolutionary history of Zhongshan and the history of oversea Zhongshanese. It houses nearly 8000 historical relics, many of which are relics which were excavated in Zhongshan, ranging from the faience of Neolithic Period to the historical relics of the Qing Dynasty. These relics are sure to contribute greatly to the research of the history of Pearl River Delta.

Open from 8:30 to 17:30 everyday, with over 300,000 visitors annually.

Changjiang Reservoir Resort

Changjiang Reservoir Resort rests roughly 9 kilometers south east of Shiqi, the downtown area of Zhongshan city. Covering an area of nearly 36 square kilometers, the resort has become a hot scenic spot for city-dwellers. In Zhongshan, there may be no prettier place to take a walk along the lake on a summer’s dawn, or have a barbecue in a spring afternoon, so no wonder the resort has been voted "an-impossible-to-miss" local sight.

The resort is named after the reservoir within its area, but the name of the reservoir always raises visitors' curiosity. Why is the reservoir named Changjiang (the Yangzi River) although it has nothing to do with the mother river – Changjiang? According to a legend, about 300 years ago, a Mr. Long and his nephew came from their hometown Jiangxi province to farm in this wildness. They named the place they resided "Changgang" (literally, it means a serious of hills) because on their way from Jiangxi to Zhongshan, they walked through one hill after another. To commemorate their hometown Jiangxi, they changed "Changgang" to "Changjiang". (In some Chinese dialects, Gang is the homophony of Jiang.) So Zhongshan’s Changjiang originating from "Changgang" is far different from the Changjiang, the mother river for Chinese.

With a storage of 50 million gallons, Changjiang reservoir is located in the north of Wuguishan Mountain, once an important base of operations during the anti-Japanese guerilla war and now the only nature reserve in Zhongshan. The basic construction of the reservoir was completed in 1963, including 6 big ponds, 7 flat-topped mountains and a 6-meter-wide, 330-meter-long dam. The resort is built with the reservoir in its center, just like a mountain-rimmed emerald. The stomach-wrenching bird's eye view of the sweeping mountains is reason why they can leave visitors satisfied. Besides, the water in the reservoir winds through islands of endless green thick trees, such as redwood, camphor, bead tree and many other varieties of trees. The green trees, as thick as a green silk, are reflected in the clean water, forming a green land of fairly tales, not to mention the numerous fishes nurtured in the crystal-clean water which add a lively feel to the wonderland.

There are other attractions, such as the giant rock resembling a woman waiting eagerly for her husband to come back home, the duck pond, the Changlongken waterfalls and many other interesting oddly-shaped stones.

Sunwen Xi Pedestrian Street

Sunwen Xi Pedestrian Street, boasting a history of over 100 years, lies to one side of the Shiqi River Bridge. While the western bank of the Shiqi River is fairly tame, crossing the bridge and walking down the pedestrian thoroughfare of Sunwen Road leads to a glamorous display of Zhongshan's new-found wealth.

The construction of the pedestrian street began more than 10 years ago and the second phase of the construction was finished by the end of 1998. After this, a series of work has been continued on supporting facilities. The past 10 years have witnessed its advance towards today's vital economic zone in Zhongshan.

The pedestrian street runs 529 meters long with a width of 15 meters, connecting Zhongshan Department Store in the east to Zhongshan Commerce Building in the west. The street is bestrewed with 137 shops, including large department stores, small-scale stores and restaurants, not to mention the oldest drugstore of Zhongshan, Fu Shou Tang. The buildings along both sides presents a typical NanYang architecture style, a style combining the European colonial architecture style in the late 1890s and the early 1900s with the traditional Cantonese sotto portico style. The storied buildings with 2-3 floors mostly and 4 floors occasionally adjoin together to form a magnificent arcade for pedestrians against rain, wind or the strong southern sunshine. Accordingly, these arcaded buildings are valuable not only in terms of history and culture, but also in terms of economy.

Besides shopping, the pedestrian street is also a snacker's Shangri-la and snacking is perhaps the best way to discover the pleasure the street can offer. Be sure to pick up almond cakes for a taste of century-old gastronomic history. Almond cakes have a special place in the hearts of Zhongshan's visitors and are must-try specialties.

The pedestrian street reflects the local customs. The bronze statue of a pedicab at the entrance, now the most touching symbol of the pedestrian street, represents a typical sight of Zhongshan in the 1920s and 1930s: a puller stopped his pedicab in front of a neatly-dressed gentleman who was about to step into the cab. On the right wall near the entrance, an embossment depicts the hustle and bustle of this traditional trading street in its heyday: streams of visitors, busy street vendors and even policemen ruthlessly but responsibly maintaining the social order.

The reputation of Sunwen Xi Pedestrian Street is built upon its contribution to the economy and culture of Zhongshan City. Tourists come to visit and shop in an endless stream every year. As a result, their consumption has occupied a significant percentage in the sum consumption income of Zhongshan. Besides, the authorities spare no effort to strengthen and reinforce the development of Zhongshan culture and this effort is perfectly incarnated by the building of The Cultural Square.

The cultural square has been built by the end of September, 1998, and then after two times reconstruction, it was eventually put into service in January, 1999.

The Cultural Square covers an area of 303 square meters. The magnificent floor fountain is the first one in Zhongshan. On the wall of the arcade building is a large fresco which is an epitome of the Sunwen west Road in its twenties and thirties, detailing vividly the local customs of that time. Right in front of the square, there is a 60-square-meter-wide stage where performances are often held for residents, visitors and retailers. Since the square was built and put into service, the estate management company of the pedestrian street has successfully held various entertainment events, such as singing, dancing, acrobatic performance, folk art performance, riddle contest, large-scale promotion functions and etc. In addition, there is a routine street performance every night, including playing guitar, koto (a traditional Chinese stringed instrument), electronic organ, and saxophone.

Zhongshan Hot Spring Resort

When tourists think of Zhongshan Hot Spring Resort, they immediately picture the various hot spring ponds scattering among the green mountains. But this resort is no one-hit wonder; known as one of the top hot springs in China, it can back up any boast with its impressive resume.

Situated in Sanxiang town, the resort enjoys a very convenient location: 26 kilometers from Macau, 15 minutes' drive from the seaside resort city Zhuhai, 24 kilometers from the downtown of Zhongshan and 10 kilometers from former residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, in Cuiheng Village.

The resort, covering an area of 2.2 million square meters, is fringed by the ever-green Luoshanmei Hill which boasts numerous hot springs. Gorgeous imperial-garden-style buildings with meticulously arranged walkways and picturesque pavilions, the resort features a large outdoor hot spring center and two golf courses.

The hot spring center is an outdoor spa with a total area of 30,000 square meters. The hot spring has three natural spring mouths and water temperature can reach as high as 93 degrees centigrade. The spring water, rich in minerals like natrium, autunite, and magnesium, have numerous health benefits such as improving blood circulation and stimulating metabolism. Hot spring ponds of different sizes and different therapeutic function make the resort.

Also many recreational facilities are available, such as tennis court, shooting gallery, Karaoke room, massage parlor, swimming pool, and golf club.

The Golf Club, the first one in China, has long enjoyed the respect of the golf fans. The courses are located on a mountain slope. The one designed by Arnold Palmer is 5,929 yards long and has many wave-like fairways, while the other course designed by Jack Nicklaus is 6,396 yards long and has many sand pits, which makes the course more difficult for playing.

The resort is a perfect weekend getaway. If you want to stay longer, the resort provides very neat and comfortable accommodation. The four-star hotel offers more than 300 guestrooms and 15 villas. All the guestrooms are well equipped with comfortable facilities which make guests feel at home. The hotel's business center offers basic services including fax, typing, photocopying, internet access and mailing.

The resort boasts a very marvelous history; many senior officials have visited and stayed here, including King Sihanouk of Cambodia, former president Jiang Zemin, former premier Li Peng and the late former paramount leader, Deng Xiaoping. About Deng's visit, there is an interesting story. It is said that in 1984, Deng Xiaoping made a trip to this noted resort. When Deng Xiaoping was hiking up the nearby Sister Luo Hill, the doctors accompanying him suggested they head back because they thought it was too much work for a 79-year-old man, but Deng responded with "There is no turning back now". This statement is now wide spread, because it is believed to be a pun, implying Deng's attitude towards the reform that he advocated but encountered opposition from some conservative hardliners at that time. Now this story is illustrated by a large outdoor portrait, which becomes a new attraction of the resort.

Chrysanthemum Show in Xiaolan

The Chinese obsession with chrysanthemum is taken to new height in Xiaolan, where chrysanthemum show is held annually as a regular autumn event. Known locally as the “Town of Chrysanthemum”, Xiaolan boasts almost a whole town of chrysanthemums that dresses up in bold pastels at harvest time.

Xiaolan, a prosperous town in Zhongshan, has always been enjoying a reputation for its centuries-long practice of chrysanthemum cultivation. The practice goes far back in time. According to some legend, it is said that during the Xianchun period of Southern Song Dynasty (1265-1274 ), a concubine of the then emperor Song Duzong escaped from the heavily-guarded palace at the risk of her own life, hoping to pursue her own true love. She went all the way south to evade the arrest of soldiers sent by the furious emperor. First she took refugee in Zhuji Alley, Nanxiong county, Guangdong Province where she met a lot of business people, and politicians who had come from the North and settled there so as not to get involved in the war taking place in the North. The peaceful life was soon disrupted by the following guards, so the concubine, together with those friends she newly made, ran further south till they finally arrived in Xiaolan, Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City) where they managed to get rid of the following guards. The county was scattered with countless juicy yellow chrysanthemum flowers and they fell in love with the beautiful land at first sight and they all agreed to take residence here. Since then, they worked hard and happily in this Chrysanthemum Land, they have not only preserved local people’s practice of chrysanthemum cultivation, but also developing it into art.

From October to November every year in fall, the splendid chrysanthemum show is held along the major streets, and in the parks. The show, featuring about 100, 000 pots of over thousand varieties, is unequaled by any ever made in this country and thousands of visitors makes it as one of Zhongshan’s top ten attractions undoubtedly Every 60 years, a grand chrysanthemum exhibition will be held in Xiaolan.

The Xiaolan chrysanthemum show never fails to come up with some innovative ideas about design every year and has earned itself a place in the Guinness Book of Records. However, the show has formed its own traditional style, highlighted by dramatic shapes, vibrant colors, and numerous blossoms. The “thousand bloom” plants, for example, feature hundreds---if not quite thousands--- of simultaneous blossoms in massive, domed-shaped arrays, all from a single plant. Another traditional design is disciplined color patterns formed by quantities of chrysanthemum arranged in diagonal lines. A third type is animal-like frameworks covered by small chrysanthemums.

Besides the chrysanthemum show, there is a special chrysanthemum banquet, including the renowned chrysanthemum fish meat balls, chrysanthemum cakes, chrysanthemum-brewed wine, meat with chrysanthemum, and other chrysanthemum-related dishes.

Zimaling Park was built in July 1992 and was officially open to visitors on October 1st, 1993. Covering a total area of 88.5 hectares, the park is claimed to be a comprehensive park which combines ecology and recreation together.

Located in the southern part of Zhongshan Rd. No. 4, Zimaling Park was the original site of one of the top 8 sights of ancient Zhongshan. During the Ming and Qing Dynasty, it was the place for the noble to ride horses and have fun.

The park has four entrances. The north gate, connecting Zhongshan Road, one of the main traffic arteries, is a major entrance to the park. Within the park, there are more than 20 sights and a large bird-cage garden. Wandering aimlessly among them might be most enjoyable. Just a few steps away from the north gate, there is a grand statue of a horse, which symbolizes the booming economy of Zhongshan. The 70-meter-long fountain with a stainless lotus high in the middle represents the adorable achievements made in Zhongshan since the implementation of reform and opening-up.

A stroll around the scenic spots in the park is definitely exciting. There are various places to visit along the way, including Moya Garden with rocks inscribed with poems to show the unique beauty of Chinese calligraphy, Flowers Garden with diversified flowers smelling good all year long, Celebrity Botanical Garden with valuable trees planted by celebrities, Litchi Garden filled with the famous variety of Litchi, Feizixiao, Wildness Garden with an original view of the woods and hills, Koi Pond with fish frolicking happily in the water, Spring Garden with peach blossom flaring, Water City with visitors paddling, Lotus Garden covered with water lily, Rose Garden with colorful vibrant roses, Bird Garden with birds chirping, and the barbecue field full of laughter from the happy visitors. In January, 1945, the Pearl River Column of Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Units was founded in Wuguishan District, with its headquarters in Gu's Ancestral Temple of Binlang Village in the district. In 1983, it was reformed as Wuguishan District Department, and in 1986, as Wugui Mountain Town. In 2005, Zhongshan Municipal Government set up the Wugui Mountain Natural Reserve. Then Wugui Mountain Town was reformed again as the Wugui Office of Zhongshan Municipal Government, and that turn over a new page in Wugui Mountain's development.

Wuguishan District has its great advantageous conditions for development. It is adjacent to the urban areas of Zhongshan City, and also possesses charming scenery of Wugui Mountain Natural Reserve. Besides, the whole district provides "One-stop" services, making investment easier for all investors. Positioning as Leisure Commercial Center and Cultural Exhibition Center

Chen Genkai, Party Secretary of Zhongshan gave instructions to Shiqi District and pointed out that it shall develop an urban economy. To follow up, Shiqi District made intensive research into its development strategies and pros and cons of an urban economy. Thorough analysis of urban economy has been made and the development framework has emerged.

In its analysis, to develop urban economy, its strengths lie in: First, the sound economic environment in both Zhongshan and China; Second, Shiqi District has unique commercial culture and development conditions; Third, it is connected with convenient transportation. And there's weaknesses: the trend of down-slide of economic centers makes it impossible for Shiqi District to remain as the economic center of the whole city; the eastward movement of administrative departments has changed Shiqi's position as the political center; the eastward movement of cultural facilities and institutions has weakened Shiqi's cultural status as the cultural center; more competitors have fragmentized the resources of Shiqi as the commercial center.

Meanwhile, the analysis repositioned Shiqi District as Recreational Business District (RBD) and Cultural Exhibition Center (CEC). RBD aims to build the district into a center facilitating leisure, recreation, sightseeing and shopping activities for both local citizens and tourists, integrating business services, recreation and cultural tourism, on the base of a commercial center; CEC is to further promote Zhongshan culture, especially the essence of Shiqi culture and contribute to a culturally advanced Zhongshan, by making use of historical treasures and resources.
